The big rules for planning your website

Rule 1: Your website is for reaching out to people.

Rule 2: Keep your website pages lean and clean.

Rule 3: Keep your website functional.

Creating a comfortable website

There are elements of your website that can help create comfort for your visitors.

1. Consistent layout from page to page: Consistent website layouts give your website a sense of unity, 'flow', and polish. Certain, basic elements of your website should be consistant throughout all of it's pages. Your headers, page layout, colors, fonts and menus should all be the same on all the pages of your website. This helps new visitors better navigate your website because they can find the menu in the same place on each page. Consistent headers, page layout, colors and fonts give your website a 'look' that visitors can remember. It helps with the image you want to present on your website. These elements also gives your website a feel of 'wholeness' because your pages 'flow' better and the pages share a common connection.

Note: As with all rules, there are exceptions. There are some situations where pages within a website can be different from the other pages. Introduction pages are an example of a web page that does not always need to have the same layout as the rest of the pages of the website.

2. Type and style of content consistent over time: Your website should not look totally different every time a person visits. This is an extension of number 1. Return visitors like a feeling of familiarity and expect to recognize your website if they return a month later. When you visit your favorite restaurant you expect the menu to be, basically, the same. You won't mind if the soup of the day changes, but you want to be able to choose from the things that made that restaurant your favorite.

3. Easy to navigate from one page or section to another: Provide clear and direct links to the information your visitors are seeking. Visitors usually don’t appreciate being forced to jump through hoops or follow a preset path. Make your website less stressful to your visitors. Avoid dead end pages. Dead end web pages are pages that have no navigation options, within the page, to navigate away from that page. In addition, you should be sure that all of your links are working and avoid links that direct your visitors to some place other than where you tell them you are sending them.

4. The look of the site: People will not spend much time or return to your website if it is not minimally pleasing to the eye. The first and most basic thing is to make sure your website has an appropriate look according to the purpose of he website. A website for a management consultant should probably avoid pages full of animated, cartoon gifs! A website should also have an uncluttered look. Visitors quickly move past confusion. Give some thought to your color scheme as well. Choose color that are easy on the eyes and blend well. Choosing awkward color combination can fatigue your reader. Be sure your text can be easily seen and read over your background. Use your imagination and be honest with yourself, if you don't like it or it's difficult to read to you, others will likely feel the same. Ask others to give you feedback.

Keep your website fresh

If your material never changes, the odds are pretty good that most people won’t come back to it very often, if ever. Unless your sole topic is a rock-solid reference subject, you can’t get away with anything less regular updating.

If your core material is something that doesn’t change often, you need to add some peripheral material that you can replace more frequently. Adding a Tip of the Day, fresh links, a Did You Know? column, or something along those lines so that you can avoid offering only stale content to your return visitors. Creating a visitors' comment section or creating a blog or forum as part of your website are also way of getting fresh content.

Remember: A Web site must change at least once a month to keep visitors interested in coming back to it.
